In the last few weeks of 2003, it was evident that the 60th anniversary of D-Day would be a significant occasion, and many owners of Military vehicles would make the pilgrimage to the Normandy Beaches.

But with news that accommodation was already in short supply, it soon became obvious that there would be many owners staying in the UK.

With this in mind, ideas for a Shropshire based event to mark the occasion, soon emerged, linked to the desire to use a Military venue.

Using a Military Barracks was not practical and would likely be refused, as the Security situation, post 9/11, was still critical. The answer was actually quite simple, and surprisingly gained immediate support from the Military, DTE Nesscliffe. The RAF was also equally receptive.

We had perceived the event as purely a one off, but at a de-briefing session with the Military soon after, we became aware that we could consider that we had an annual event on our hands.

So with no long term plans, the ‘Gathering’ emerged to be, hopefully, a regular fixture in the MVT calendar.

It goes without saying that without the support of the Military, the event would not happen.
